From the time of Maestro Landestoy’s escaping his country’s dictatorship, which later brought him decades of international fame as a pop songwriter known then as Bullumba, to a spiritual time where he developed his new music style while living in a monastery, this entertaining program celebrates the illustrious career and life of one of today’s most prominent Latin American composers.
Rising out of the popular Latin music scene, and absorbing jazz and classical influences, the diverse compositions of Maestro Landestoy succeeds in fusing both popular rhythms and contemporary sounds with the classics. His body of works for solo guitar and piano, performed by Mr. Roldan and Mr. Wu, are delightful and creative inventions that capture the soul of many music styles of both past and present. Maestro Landestoy, in a rare performance, will accompany Ms. Tonna at the piano with the songs that made him internationally well known through the voices of such Latin icons as Celia Cruz, Graciela and Tona la Negra.
The Tribute to Landestoy concert is a memorable show that transports the audience into another place and time. His music continues to attract new audiences and musicians worldwide and has been arranged for orchestras, ballet companies, and chamber groups. Past performances include Lincoln Center, Town Hall, Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, the United Nations Concert Hall, 2008 Mannes College Guitar Festival, Brooklyn College, Bronx Community College, CAMI Hall and Steinway Hall @ Steinway and sons. In 2007 Maestro Landestoy was invited and honored by the President and the First Lady of the Dominican Republic and where a tribute concert of his music was performed in several cities.
